July 2, 2011: We went in search of Cedar Hill, the Frederick Douglass home in Anacostia. We passed by the Deco building "Anacostia" and the "Big Chair":
The house was built between 1855 and 1859 by John VanHook, who was one of the developers of Uniontown--now known as Anacostia.
Douglass enlarged the house and added the "Growelry," a one-room escape where he could write. The reconstructed Growelry is on the left:
At about 128 feet above sea level (the nearby River is at sea level), Cedar Hill has one of the the most spectacular views of Washington, DC.
