Farmers' Market and Buddhist Barbecue

Sebastopol, CA, July 10, 2011: California has real farmers' markets, so we started with the Sunday market in Sebastopol.

We went to the Enmanji Temple for the 57th annual "Buddhist Barbecue," believed to be the grandfather of Bay Area teriyaki barbecues. Enmanji is Japanese for "Garden Fulfillment Temple." The temple is in the style of a 12th century Kamakura Japanese temple and was created as part of an exhibit for the 1933 Chicago World's Fair. The building was disassembled in Chicago and shipped to Sebastopol for reassembly.
In addition to the teriyaki chicken plate lunch, there was entertainment, demonstrations of Ikebana, bonsai and origami, an exhibit of Japanese history in California, a bazaar, and a plant sale!
