Healdsburg, CA, May 13, 2012: We started the day at the open house at the Russian River Rose Company,
a nursery which grows over 650 varieties of roses in the middle of the
vineyards. Historically, roses were the canaries in the grape vineyard
coal mines--if the roses were harmed by a pest or disease, the grapes
would be soon to follow. As one drives down the road through wine
country, it's still common to see a rose bush planted at the end of each
row of grape vines. In addition, coastal California has a wonderful
climate for roses. Whenever an Eastern gardener wants to talk roses, we
always say: "If you want to grow roses, move to California"
