Day Trip to Santa Barbara and San Simeon

December 30, 2010: We left early in the morning for an ambitious day trip to Hearst Castle at San Simeon, midway on the Central Coast. The Santa Ana Freeway took us by downtown LA and the Cathedral of Our Lady and the Angels:

We also caught these views of the Hollywood Sign and Capitol Records:

Along US 101 above Ventura we say the Channel Islands:
And offshore petroleum production:

We took a quick detour at San Ysidro Road and drove by Charlie Chaplin's Montecito Inn:

In Santa Barbara, we stopped for coffee at Peet's, which may be the only coffee shop in America where the restrooms are out the back and across an expansive interior courtyard:

We made a quick visit to the Mission Santa Barbara:
The Madonna and Child and Fra Junipero Serra:

Along the Chumash Highway we had these view of the Pacific and of Lake Cachuma:

We drove by Mission Santa Inés, and The Hitching Post restaurant featured in the movie Sideways:

Bishop's Peak:
