Ohio Rest Stops

At our first rest stop, we drove right by this deer and only saw it when we got out of the car.  Then we noticed that the deer wasn't moving and finally we surmised that it was a statue:

 In the East, I-70 mostly parallels U.S. Route 40 which itself follows the old National Road, which was the first federal highway effectively subsidizing the settlement of the Northwest Territory and points west.  A mile marker from the National Road is preserved in another rest stop.

The World's Best Bloody Mary

Indianapolis, IN, September 16, 2012: Pearl’s Bistro, 1475 W. 86th Street, is open for brunch only one Sunday each month. Your drinks choice is a mimosa or the world’s BEST Bloody Mary. The Bloody Mary is heavy on horseradish, Tobasco and vodka, and comes with the usual celery stick AND a plastic sword with a slice of cucumber, lime and green pepper AND a second plastic sword with blue-cheese stuffed large green olives wrapped with prosciutto! It’s a salad, a starter and one hell of a drink!

From Broadripple to Zionsville

After lunch we drove north through Carmel to Westfield and turned left onto 176th Street in search of Restyled Furniture which had been promoted in the Indianapolis Star.

Ohio's Giant Wedding Cake

St. Clairsville, OH, September 14, 2012:  Westbound on I-70 one can either go through Wheeling, WV or go around it on the I-470 bypass.  But either way, only a few miles into Ohio, one sees a giant wedding cake sitting off to the right.  We've passed by many times, but this time we detoured to see this building up close.  It turns out to be the Belmont County Courthouse (c. 1886) which sits atop the highest hill in downtown St. Clairsville just a mile north of I-70.
